Tempestini at the wheel of his Hyundai I20 R5 takes the win, while Christian Merli and his co-driver Marco Zortea in their Skoda Fabia R5 finish 15th overall. The 21st edition of the Prealpi Master Show rally at Sernaglia della Battaglia in Treviso province near Venice was the 2nd round of the Challenge Rally Terra, characterised by rain, wind and special stages made unrecognisable by mud and water.
“An extremely difficult race, very tricky, with the ruts left by the other drivers filled with water. Braking was very hard, and in the first few special stages we made a few mistakes. In the last one I hit a straw bale and the car switched itself off. Without that error I could have made the top ten. I’m happy anyway, considering the fact that the entry list included 41 R5s with high-profile rally drivers who compete all year round.”
Tempestini tops the timesheet in the first special stage on Saturday, with Merli in 14th place. On Sunday, three special stages on the 9.180 km “Master Show” track, in incessant rain and cold wind. In the first special stage, pulling out all the stops, Bettega and his co-driver Paolo Cargnelutti achieve the best time, while Merli and Zortea finish close to the top ten. In the next round, Merli is classified 14th. In the final one, he touches a straw bale and the top ten end up out of his reach.
1st Tempestini/Palitta (Hyundai I20), 2nd Bresolin/Ometto (Ford Fiesta WRC) 13”7 behind, 3rd Bettega/Carnegliutti (Skoda Fabia R5) 15”1 behind.
