Behind the wheel of his Osella FA 30 Zytek LRM Christian Merli places second overall and takes the win in Group E2-SS at the 62nd edition of the Cronoscalata Monte Erice in Trapani province in Sicily, the penultimate round of the 2020 Italian hill climb championship CIVM. Two race runs on the 5.730 km track with a scoring coefficient of 1.5 each. Simone Faggioli now leads the championship standings with 105 points, while Christian is at 92.50.
“We’re happy. Today there was more rubber on the track than during practice, and in Race 1 I came very close to Faggioli. The changes we’d made after the practice runs clearly paid off. In Race 2 we tweaked things some more, but I’d put too much strain on the tyres in Race 1. I had a hard time finding the right rhythm, because my Osella was understeering. I thought I’d be able to achieve the same time in the second session. It’s okay.”
In the first official practice run Simone Faggioli scores the best time, with Merli 10”53 behind. Times go down in the second run, but Faggioli is again first, with the champion from Trentino 3”64 behind.
In Race 1 Faggioli establishes a new track record in 2’49”68, and Merli, pushing hard, finishes just 1”67 behind, which makes him second overall and first among the single-seaters. Early in the afternoon Faggioli also wins Race 2, with Merli leaving 3”66 on the track.
