Christian Merli racing at the 38th Rally Trofeo ACI Como

Christian Merli and his co-driver Anna Tomasi, 2019 Italian WRC champion, will be participating at the 38th Rally Trofeo ACI Como, the national final of the Rally Cup Italia 2019. Starting at Piazza Cavour in Como, they will be racing their Skoda Fabia R5, competition number 22, in two special stages on Friday: Sormano–Pian del Tivano (7.500 km) and Bellagio (11.250 km). Six more timed runs are scheduled for Saturday, until the first competitor reaches Como again at 5pm. The rally takes place entirely on sealed surfaces; its total length is 361 km, of which 74 km make up the eight special stages.

Christian returns to his great passion
“I needed to take a break from hill climbing and have some fun. I certainly haven’t picked the easiest race but instead one with special stages I’ve never done before. I haven’t raced in a sealed-surface rally for more than seven years, and in the group of our Skoda R5 there are no fewer than 31 teams, with the first 15 competing for the win. Prestigious names in rallying, they’ve been racing all year and they know the tracks of the special stages. In my view the trickiest stages are Grandola and Corrido, but the others are no joke either, because there are many wooded sections and the surface will be damp. It’s going to be a tough competition, and we’ll have to find the right combination of setup and tyres to start with. The goal? To do a good job, enjoy myself, get a few slides in, and live my passion.”

The 38th Rally Trofeo ACI Como
The event organised by Automobile Club Como boasts a record grid of 198 teams. 70 finalists will be competing for the Rally Cup Italia, and the race will also determine the winners of the Supercoppa WRC Italia and the three one-make trophies of Michelin, Renault and Suzuki. Overall, a bumper entry list of teams from sixteen Italian regions, Switzerland and Turkey.
