Christian Merli at the start of the 71st Trento – Bondone

This coming Sunday will see the 71st edition of the Trento – Bondone hill climb, organised by the Scuderia Trentina in collaboration with Automobile Club Trento. It is the 5th round of the European championship and the 6th round of the Italian hill climb championship CIVM. Christian Merli will be taking the start with his Osella FA 30 Judd LRM bearing the competition number 5. The race will finally be open to the public again, after the cancellation in 2020 and a 2021 edition with the ranking influenced by the rain which slowed down all the sports cars.

From Montevideo to Vason
Along the 17.300 km track, which has an altitude difference of 1350 m, there are 42 hairpins and more than 180 bends. The race is unique in Europe, and it is a tough test both for the cars and for the drivers’ physical stamina. A hill climb race where managing the tyres, the engine and the brakes demands the utmost attention. Ten minutes of maximum concentration. There will be two big screens along the track, one at Candriai and the other at Rocce Rosse, and the race will be shown live on Trentino TV, again in cooperation with Aci Sport, the Italian federation, who produce the livestream of all the CIVM competitions, and a number of videocameras will be added along the track for wider coverage.

Christian’s comments
“It’s going to be a trying race for us with a lot of accelerating out of bends. A tough race. We’re currently working on our FA 30 because what looked like a simple mechanical issue forced us to dismantle the entire car. At the end we found that a problem with a cable was causing the car to go out. Now we’ve begun to reassemble everything. Then we’ll prepare the setup and the transmission for this very particular race. We’ll also install the additional cooling fans on the water radiators and increase the air flow on the brakes. We’re working day and night to make it in time for the checking on Friday, hoping that everything will be ready for the first practice run on Saturday. It won’t be easy but we’ll do our best to take home maximum points for the European championship.”
